About

Established in 1947 by Charles Menendez Macleod, Charles Macleod Ltd, locally known as “Charlie Barleys”, is a producer of Award Winning Stornoway Black Pudding. Produced from a family recipe on the Isle of Lewis, the Black Pudding is famous throughout the world as a ‘taste of the Hebrides’. A the shop in Ropework Park, Stornoway you will also find premium home cooked dishes, locally sourced products, deli items and quality “hard to find” products. Why Charlie Barley? MacLeod is the most common name in Lewis and therefore, as is the case throughout Gaeldom, patronymics or nicknames are popularly used in place of surnames for ease of identification. Almost inevitably Charles M MacLeod was renamed and rhymed with Barley - an appellation naturally passed on through the family. Renowned for its high quality and versatility as an ingredient, Stornoway Black Pudding has been awarded Protected Geographical Indication (PGI) status, under the EU's Protected Food Name (PFN) scheme, assuring consumers they get the utmost guarantee that they are buying the genuine, premium product.
