Corncrake

The rare Corncrake arrives in the island in late April and heads straight for the longest vegetation, in nettle beds, iris beds and among dry stone dykes. This is the best time to see Corncrake in the Outer Hebrides, before the crops and other vegetation provide more cover.

The Balranald RSPB reserve on North Uist is one of the best places to see Corncrake in the Western Isles and hear their distinctive rasping call. Once a common farmland bird but the British population of this elusive is now almost exclusively restricted to the Hebridean Islands – making a birding holiday to the Outer Hebrides a must for enthusiastic ornithologists.
