The Outer Hebrides have an enviable reputation for seafood, particularly shellfish. Stornoway is famous for its langoustines, and lobsters are harvested from the fresh waters around the Outer Hebrides. Look out for local rope-grown mussels and scallops on restaurant menus and in the ever growing number of seafood-shacks. You may also get the opportunity to taste razor-clams and cockles, fresh from an island beaches.
As well as shellfish, there are a number of smokehouses, focused on salmon but also producing smoked scallops, trout and other products. Stornoway smokehouse is a boutique producer in the middle of town with a double-smoked process. On the west-side of Lewis, the owners of Uig Lodge, have now opened their own restaurant, Uig Sands, with wondrous views over the famous beach. In South Uist, Salar Smokehouse is particularly famous for its hot-smoked salmon in an ever-growing range of flavours - from the traditional (honey & thyme) to the exotic (chilli & lime).
