OHT worked in partnership with the CnES to launch the Hebridean Way cycling route in 2016 and walking route in 2017. The Hebridean Way is dual aspect - a 185 mile cycling route from Vatersay to the Butt of Lewis and a 156 walking route from Vatersay to Stornoway. The routes have quickly become established as Scotland's long-distance routes, with a reputation for a friendly welcome and true isolation.
The two routes are now welcoming more than 5,000 people to the Outer Hebrides each year.
The project has received a funding package from CnES, HIE and SNH to develop the Hebridean Way and to date OHT has established a network of walking and cycling friendly "Pit Stops" for those completing the Hebridean Way as well as a range of maps, guidebooks and a new improved website.
Businesses can become a Hebridean Way Pit Stop and there is more information here. To become a Pit Stop, simply login into your Outer Hebrides members account, and add a Hebridean Way Pit Stop subscription.
We have also undertaken an audit of the route to identify maintenance priorities, which are now being addressed.
