Vatersay (Bhatarsaigh) is the southernmost inhabited island in the Outer Hebrides since Mingulay was abandoned in 1912 and is now connected to Barra by a causeway. Overall it is approximately three miles by three, but so deeply indented by the sea from the east and west that only a narrow strip of machair, or sandy grassland and dunes, prevents it becoming two separate islands. The eastern bay ends in a long sandy beach and offering some of the best anchorage around Vatersay.
FACILITIES AND FUEL ON VATERSAY
There is a small community hall behind the east beach which is home to the public toilets on Vatersay. In the summer months it also serves as a cafe eith toilets and showers. The equally magnificent beach to the west is only a few minute’s walk over the dunes.
Vatersay Bay benefits from a newly completed fishing pontoon and slipway, while diesel can be bought with a council fuel card on the slipway at the causeway.
VATERSAY CAUSEWAY
The causeway to Vatersay was built some 20 years ago following the unfortunate drowning of the Ministry of Agriculture bull – Bernie - as he was being swum over the strait to meet the young ladies of Vatersay
