East Loch Tarbert (Loch an Tairbeairt) holds a strategic place at the centre of the east coast of the archipelago of the Outer Hebrides perfect for those enjoying a Western Isles sailing break.
The north side of the loch extends from Scalpay (Sgalpaigh) - a bustling fishing community linked to Harris by a road bridge, to the village of Tarbert - the main post and ferry terminal for the island.
FACILITIES AT TARBERT
There are several wild anchorages in the outer Loch and limited access to the fishing pier. It is important to keep well clear of the ferries who have limited ability to manoeuvre in the narrow channels.
As the main settlement on Harris, Tarbert has a full range of facilities with hotels and shops as well as banking, tourist information and the famous Isle of Harris distillery is just next to the marina.
SAILING AND ACTIVITES IN TARBERT
The harbour is a good stepping off point for day trips across Harris and also to the Shiants. CalMac ferries to Uig on Skye and Lochmaddy in North Uist also sail from Tarbert
The North Harris Trust, the community land trust that owns much of the land in the area and offers guided walks and activities depending on the season, has its base here.
