Lying between Harris and North Uist, the Sound of Harris is eight miles long and runs along a SE to NW axis.
The Stanton Channel has been newly buoyed to avoid the reef and rock hazards, however crews sailing in the Sound of Harris are advised that carefully chosen timing is crucial as the tidal streams in this area are very variable.

Berneray Harbour has a fishing pier and a good range of basic facilities and there are several wild anchorages nearby.
Leverburgh, which is the terminal for the ferry to Berneray, has a fishing pier and pontoon where there is a selection of services and access to buses.
