Sailing and Loch Skipport (Loch Sgiopoirt) have a longstanding history as this was once one of the main seaports of South Uist, which accommodated steamers sailing to the Outer Hebrides from Glasgow and Oban.
SAILING AND ANCHORAGES IN LOCH SKIPPORT
Although no longer a hub for boats sailing to the Western Isles, Loch Skipport is still a popular destination for crews sailing in the Hebrides.
This quiet loch is well sheltered and easily entered, however strong gusts can be generated by the slopes of nearby Hecla in fresh south east or south westerly winds.
Little Kettle Pool and Wizard Pool anchorages are two of the wild anchorages Loch Skipport.
Loch Skipport has friendly Shetland ponies who can be seen along the road and belong to Long Island Retreats. They do fabulous croft and island tours.
