Sparrowhawk

Once a rare site on the Isles, the Sparrowhawk population has increased considerably over recent years. The Sparrowhawk is usually associated with woodland habitat and the recent increase in the number of woodland plantations and planting of trees and shrubs in gardens has provided new habitats for this species.

The sparrow hawk can be distinguished from other small birds of prey by its short rounded wings and long tail. Its flight is characterised by rapid flaps interspersed with short glides and they are often seen flying low over the ground along the edge of woodland.

DIET

It specialises in catching small woodland birds but can take items as large as rock doves.

WHERE TO LOOK

Anywhere around small areas of woodland or gardens with bushes and trees. The most reliable trail locations are Aline Community Woodland, Langais and Loch Druidibeag.

WHEN TO LOOK

They are resident and can be seen at any time of year but are most active during the spring and summer when feeding young.
