Barra

This is the smallest of the six main islands with a circular road around the coast. The interior hills are uninhabited and the coast is fringed by fertile croft land and small crofting communities.

Castlebay is the main settlement and ferry port. The West coast hosts some spectacular sandy beaches and fertile machair. The offshore islands of Barra Head and Mingulay are home to important seabird colonies and can be reached by boat on day trips from Castlebay in good weather.

At the Craigston trail location a path leads into the interior hills where golden eagle and merlin are often seen.
