Benbecula lies between North and South Uist and is connected by causeways. This is the lowest lying of the six main islands in the Outer Hebrides with the highest peak Rueval only reaching 124 meters in altitude.
In the east the coastline is heavily indented with numerous tidal islands and skerries. The central moorland area is interspersed with numerous lochans. In the west there are areas of machair grassland and nutrient rich lochs that support good numbers of wildfowl. Loch Mor is one of just a few places in Scotland where the rare red-necked phalarope can be seen on its breeding grounds. The main settlement on Benbecula is Balvanich where the airport is located.
At the Reuval trail location a track leads across the island through an areas of moorland that is a stronghold for breeding hen harrier, short-eared owl and merlin.
