About

When staying here we recommend you visit Garriemonie Beach, a huge expanse of sand just perfect for beach games, dog walking and swimming, again a short drive from the cottage. Shell collecting is good and the hard to find blue rayed limpets wash up on this beach too. Shopping at the Daliburgh Coop is conveniently just a 10 minute drive and the Polochar Inn for meals and drinks is also convenient.

If you are interested in archaeology and history, South Uist has many sites to see and a hugely informative visitor centre at Kildonan.  The famous Kilpheder Wheelhouse site is also not far from the cottage.

For days out, head over to Eriskay and then catch a sailing to Barra, easily explored in a day. Or alternatively head north where you are spoilt for choice on the 'Food Trail'. Knitters shouldn't miss the chance to drop into Uist Wools to see the fine spun yarns from Hebridean sheep.

The elusive bird that gives the cottage its name has actually been seen in the garden here and during the season, following their long flight from Africa, you will hear their loud and rattling call. Short eared owls patrol the fields in the early morning and evening and there is an abundance of small birds which nest in the stone walls, hedges and on the ground.

If all that sounds too exhausting, we recommend just chilling out at the cottage, enjoying the peace and tranquillity the area offers.

Perhaps you are considering having a holiday with friends or family? In which case please note that next door to the house is a converted barn which is divided into two cottages, each sleeping four. These are Kelp Cottage and Canach Cottage and can be viewed under their own listing.
