15th April 1923, the SS Marloch left Lochboisdale with 500 islanders from Benbecula, South Uist, Eriskay and Barra, set for a new life in Canada. 100 years later, islanders have been commemorated their departure at Lochboisdale with a new Marloch Memorial at the Gateway Garden
The new permanent monument in the Islands is a place where we can go to reflect and acknowledge some of the harsher periods of our cultural history and remember all those that had little choice but to emigrate to Canada. It represents also, many elements and episodes of Clearances within our communities and for any islanders who have left our shores through choice or force but it also highlights that a warm welcome ‘home’ will always be there for those who return or visit. There was a special celebration of tying of the flags which symbolised the unity and commitment between the Island of South Uist and Canada.
The ship-like memorial was created with stones from houses and townships of those who left on the Marloch
