About

The Udal Peninsula is one of the richest human and natural environments of the Outer Hebrides. It is an exciting and beautiful time capsule preserving centuries of human and natural impacts. At its heart is the 'machair' - a Gaelic word meaning ‘fertile plain’. For thousands of years families have farmed and continue to farm this rich landscape.

The core of the Udal archaeology site is the North and South Mounds, and Rubha na Udail. Collectively these three zones of the Udal site were excavated between 1963-1994, under the direction of the late Iain Crawford.

Although their full value is yet to be realised the excavations revealed stories of families living here over a period of some 8,000 years, spanning the Neolithic period to the 18th century.
