In winter, the male is mainly white with some brownish-black markings. He also has greatly elongated tails feathers - hence the name. Females are browner. In flight, they show all dark wings and white bellies.

Flocks of between 70 - 90 birds can be present in the winter, with the first arrivals in September. Most have left by the middle of May.
