About

St Toranan, the monk who it is believed came ashore in the area in the 6th century to spread Christianity to the Outer Hebrides. He established a Temple dedicated to St Columba, Teampull Chaluim Chille, to the east of Balivanich, the ruins of which still stand today. The Temple is not easy to access due to the marshland that surrounds it, however plans are currently underway to consolidate this significant monument and to raise its profile.
